The European Parliament today elected Dr Teresa Anjinho as the new European Ombudsman. The Parliamentary Ombudsman of Malta, Judge Emeritus Joseph Zammit McKeon, extends his congratulations and best wishes to Dr Anjinho as she takes on this important responsibility. With her extensive background in law, human rights, and public service, Dr Anjinho is well-placed to guide the institution’s work towards greater transparency, accountability, and fairness in the EU’s institutions and agencies.

The Office of the Ombudsman in Malta also expresses its gratitude to the outgoing European Ombudsman, Emily O’Reilly, whose dedication and leadership significantly advanced the work of the institution. Under her guidance, the Ombudsman’s Office intensified efforts to ensure accountability and good administration, offering a model of professionalism and integrity for Ombudsman institutions across the EU.

The European Ombudsman is an independent office dedicated to investigating complaints of maladministration in the activities of European Union institutions and bodies. Established in 1995, it seeks to ensure that citizens, residents, and businesses operating within the EU are treated equitably, and that decision-making processes are open and accountable. By conducting inquiries, issuing recommendations, and engaging in constructive dialogue, the Ombudsman’s Office has enhanced trust and confidence in EU governance.

The Office of the Ombudsman in Malta looks forward to working closely with the new European Ombudsman upon taking up her role, particularly within the European Network of Ombudsmen (ENO). Coordinated by the European Ombudsman, the ENO provides an informal platform for Ombudsmen and similar bodies to exchange information on EU law and policy and share best practices. Through this collaboration, the Maltese Ombudsman’s Office remains committed to strengthening Europe’s administrative framework, ensuring greater transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in the years ahead.
