The Parliamentary Ombudsman, Judge Emeritus Joseph Zammit McKeon, welcomed H.E. Ken Toko, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the United States of America in Malta on a courtesy visit. During the meeting, the Ombudsman gave an extensive account of his mandate and that of the Commissioners and on the manner how the Office carries out investigations when persons present written complaints on acts or omissions of the public sertvoiceand/or the public administration.  The Ombudsman underlined the fact that the services, which are free of charge, are open to all persons, not only to Maltese nationals, and therefore even to USA citizens.  He laid emphasis on the fact that the Office is committed to oversee the principles of good governance being implemented in the day to day running of the public service and the public administration.

The USA Chargé d’Affaires noted the significance of having an Ombudsman institution in a functioning democracy, underscoring the importance of providing a credible and reliable avenue for persons to seek redress if they feel they have been wronged by the public authorities. Mr Toko also expressed appreciation for the institution’s openness to collaboration.

The Ombudsman updated H.E. Toko on the efforts being undertaken in order that the mandate of the Office be extended to include the promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Both parties reaffirmed the solidity of the diplomatic relations between Malta and the United States of America, and agreed on the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation between the two countries.
