Statement by the Parliamentary Ombudsman

Press StatementThe Parliamentary Ombudsman, Chief Justice Emeritus Joseph Said Pullicino, would like to reassure the public that no criticism levelled against him will deter him from fulfilling his obligations towards safeguarding the rights of citizens against maladministration, abuse of power or abuse of fundamental human rights.

The Ombudsman is comforted by the trust which the Office enjoys amongst the public.  This is attested by the numerous letters of thanks that the Office receives from citizens who find support from the Office in addressing their grievances, even from amongst those whose complaint was not sustained.  The Ombudsman is confident that the Maltese public will continue to seek his services because of its belief in the objective and serious manner in which his investigations are carried out as well the independence and autonomy the Office is vested with.

It would be a serious mistake to try to damage the reputation of a Constitutional Authority through unfounded allegations.  Such damaging and unfounded allegations can only do harm.  The Ombudsman denies all such allegations and will give a detailed account of his work at the appropriate moment.

The Ombudsman wants to reassure that his Office will not only serve citizens but will also continue to promote good public administration.

In this context, the Ombudsman appreciates the cooperation and respect which this Office has found from different Ministries, Departments and Authorities.  In particular, the Ombudsman would like to thank the Honourable Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister for the trust they have shown in him throughout the past months by assigning him various tasks which require dedication, integrity, honesty and correctness.
