The Parliamentary Ombudsman initiates the process for the appointment of a Commissioner for Education

Press ReleaseIn terms of the 2012 amendments to the Education Act, the Office of the University Ombudsman will be abolished with effect from 1 November 2013.

The Parliamentary Ombudsman has in the meantime, set in motion the process for the appointment of a Commissioner for Education in line with the provisions of Article 17A of the Ombudsman Act as well as Legal Notice 248 of 2012, which amongst others establishes the functions of a Commissioner for Education.

Until such time as this Commissioner is appointed, the Parliamentary Ombudsman has in terms of sub-article 2 of Article 10 of the Ombudsman Act, appointed Professor Charles Farrugia, the outgoing University Ombudsman, in a consultative capacity.  Professor Farrugia’s expertise is considered essential to the effectiveness of the investigation of complaints relating to the Education sector.

Interested persons are advised that complaints or submissions formerly sent for the consideration of the University Ombudsman, may be forwarded directly to the Parliamentary Ombudsman either by e-mail at office@ombudsman.org.mt or directly to the Office of the Ombudsman 11, St Paul’s Street, Valletta.
